Digital Citizenship and Internet Safety

Loomis Union School District prepares students to use the most up-to date technology and learning tools. Just as we want students to be safe at school, it is imperative that we keep our students safe on the Internet.  LUSD uses Common Sense Media curriculum to provide digital citizenship instruction to all students.

The internet opens a world of possibilities for children. The information highway offers children many opportunities for learning, constructive entertainment, and personal growth. At the same time, parents need to know about the risks their children face online and how their children can use the internet safely. Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about internet use and to know what their children are doing on the internet.

LUSD employs web filtering services in the interest of keeping harmful and inappropriate content from being accessed. We follow the laws outlined in the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and follow industry standard procedures when reviewing technology services. Internet content filtering and computer security is not perfect and it may be possible for users to access information that is intended for adults. We believe that the benefits of Internet access and computer access in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration far exceed any disadvantages. Ultimately, parents are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that their child should follow.
